After 14 seasons, Blue Bloods fans were saddened when the show ended in December 2024. While the bad news is, there’s no hope for a return, the good news is an expansion series is in the works and Donnie Wahlberg will be involved with the project. CTS has all the details on this new show, below.
Same Old Danny Reagan, Different Location
CBS recently announced a straight-to-series order, which is a “Blue Bloods Universe expansion.” In addition, Donnie Wahlberg will be part of the cast; however, there will be one major difference in this show, which is location. The new series is tentatively titled, Boston Blue.
In the spin-off, Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods character, Danny Reagan, will relocate to the Boston Police Department, and have a new partner in Detective Lena Peters.
She, too, was raised in a law enforcement family and was the oldest daughter. The new series is slated to air on CBS during the 2025/2026 television season.
Who’s Involved In Boston Blue?
While this is a new setting for Danny Reagan, in many ways, Wahlberg will return home as he was born in Boston, raised in the neighborhood of Dorchester.
Joining him in this series as showrunners are Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, who fans may recognize from Alert: MPU, L.A.’s Finest, and The Blacklist.
It’s important to note that Boston Blue is an extension of Blue Bloods and was never meant to be a spinoff. CBS already passed on a spin-off series that saw Danny moving to Texas.
Initially, Sonnier and Margolis first developed the idea for a show that followed a cop family whose eldest daughter was given a new transfer from the LAPD.
This is when the network thought of building Danny Reagan into the script. CBS and CBS Studios’ creative team agreed on the change, and the rest is history.
As Blue Bloods was so popular, and many fans were fighting to keep the series alive, will Wahlberg and his Reagan character sway viewers into tuning in to Boston Blue? Only time will tell!
