“Don’t Look Up” Team Divided Up About the Impact Of Criticism

"Don't Look UpDirector Adam McKay might stand for criticism and encourage reviews even if they’re negative, but actor Ron Perlman is not having any of it. If you hate the movie, keep it to yourself. “Don’t Look Up” Star Ron Perlman Blasts The Star-studded Movie’s Critics

Ron Perlman recently opened up about his feelings regarding the negative reviews that the movie is receiving from critics. And he made it very clear that he’d rather the negative nellies bite their tongue.

The “Hellboy” star appeared in the movie alongside an ensemble of stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry and more.

During a chat with The Independent, Perlman, 71, blasted film critics who didn’t write a marvelous review of the movie that involved the collective energy of hundreds of people. “Don’t Look Up” currently holds a 55 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is an average of 268 positive and negative reviews.

“F— you and your self-importance and this self-perpetuating need to say everything bad about something just so that you can get some attention for something that you had no idea about creating,” he told the outlet. “It’s corrupt. And it’s sick. And it’s twisted.”

Perlman, who also appears in the recent film “Nightmare Alley”, added that he believes it is “part of how the internet has almost killed journalism. And now journalism is trying to do everything they can to co-opt and maintain their importance.”

However mixed the movie’s reviews are, it still came out successful with record-breaking views on the streaming service. The movie quickly became Netflix’s second highest performing movie of all time (calculated by hours streamed by users in a film’s first 28 days).

Adam McKay On Welcoming “Negative Reviews And Reaction” From Critics

Earlier this month, director Adam McKay told IndieWire that he encourages debate and loves that the fans are divided up on whether the movie is a masterpiece or trash.

“It’s important to have debate and passionate critics. We’re living at a time like no other and stories are part of it. People should be hating them, loving them, going back and forth,” he said. “We welcome the negative reviews. I actually think it’s really good, that people should be fighting and passionate about it.”

In September, DiCaprio praised McKay’s work on the script, saying that he “has an unparalleled ability to spark conversation with humor and timely stories.”

“I knew when I read his script that it was incredibly unique, as it struck an important chord concerning the modern world we live in,” he added at the time. “Adam has woven an incredibly timely message about society, how we communicate, our current priorities, and the climate crisis into an absurdly funny yet important movie.”
