Grey’s Anatomy: Robert I Mesa Is Show’s First Indigenous Doctor

Robert I Mesa The actor Robert I. Mesa makes history in “Grey’s Anatomy” as the first indigenous doctor in the show.

The star has been promoted as a recurring cast member on Grey’s ongoing 17th season. Robert appeared on the ABC show on his debut in the third episode of the same season as intern James Chee. The character was originally part of the new class of interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Grey’s fans will see more of doctor James Chee in his scenes on the April 15 episode.

The characters, as well as the actors portraying them, entered the cast amid the pandemic. As seen in Episode 3, Intern Chee was hazed by Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) to do data entry of discharged patients. To his dismay, he discovered all patients lost at the fangs of COVID-19. It was a short but emotional scene of an intern’s hope being squashed by the harsh reality of the pandemic’s death toll.

The first indigenous doctor hopped on Instagram to celebrate history. The star wrote: “Did someone say #MoreChee? I’m so excited and honored to be the first Indigenous Doctor on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

He continued saying, “Thank you so much to ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ I know much of this is going to mean to my Indigenous Peoples. Also, one more thing! “It’s a Good Day to be Indigenous.”

Following the emotional scenes of Meredith’s illness, her beach illusionary, and fan-favorite returns in the series, James Chee is set to showcase his fresh perspectives on the Grace Sloan Hospital.

But the plot development and the character comebacks might be the series’ way of ending the TV show that has been airing for almost two decades.

The show recently featured a shocker of two fan-favorite characters Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) appearing in Meredith’s hallucinatory beach scenes.

It was revealed that Chyler filmed her scenes remotely in Vancouver due to her commitments to “Supergirl” and COVID restrictions. Eric confirmed they used green screen magic for the scene to work.

The showrunner Krista Vernoff confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that Season 17 could be the finale.

“I’m planning a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale. I’m planning for both contingencies and it’s hard, and it’s not ideal. It’s not where I wish we were,” Krista said.
