The show’s latest reunion for “Japril” was trending globally even before it aired. Former series regular Sarah Drew was brought back to the show as Dr. April Kepner, as part of Dr. Jackson’s proper sendoff.

The showrunners Vernoff and the series writers had to ensure Jackson’s ending story will satisfy fans. Nothing compares to giving the show’s one of the most fan-favorite couples, Dr. Kepner and Dr. Jackson, a proper closure.

To give Dr. Jackson a satisfying farewell, the show centered on his character in the “Look Up Child” episode with him paying a visit to his father Robert (Eric Roberts), meeting his ex and the love of his life April (Drew), and dropping by to give her mother, Dr. Catherine Fox (series EP Debbie Allen) an update.

His coming departure was revealed in his conversations with Robert and April by telling them he has decided to take over the family foundation, to achieve exact change in “creating real racial equity in medicine,” which he didn’t get to do while working in the healthcare system. This decision requires him to move to Boston which also entails April, with partner Matthew (Justin Bruening), currently residing in Seattle, to move and follow Jackson so he can continue co-parenting his and April’s child, Harriet.

“I’m not running from something, I’m trying to run to something, I’m trying to make something my own,” Jackson said. April released another shocker that she and Matthew had separated, giving fans the excitement for the couple’s possible comeback.

“I will forever be grateful for the boundless opportunities provided me by Shonda, the network, studio, fellow castmates, our incredible crew, Krista, Ellen [Pompeo], and Debbie [Allen]. As an actor, director and person, I have been obscenely lucky to learn so much from so many and I thank our beautiful fans, who breathe so much energy and appreciation into our shared worlds,” Williams said.

“The experience and endurance born of creating nearly 300 hours of leading global television is a gift I’ll carry always. I am immensely proud of our work, our impact, and to be moving forward with so many tools, opportunities, allies, and dear friends.”
