Fans were very expectant of her character’s return in season 17 of Grey’s as her person, Dr. Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) struggled to fight against the high-stakes battle over COVID.
Meredith fell into a coma, which allowed the show writers to parade the beloved characters’ return from the dead that fans had only thought of imagining.
Meredith either dreamed of the following or encountered them in the afterlife first with her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Derek’s appearance at the beach paved the way for other characters to enter the scene, including George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane).
April Kepner (Sarah Drew) also had a reunion with ex Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) that showed “Japril’s” closure.
Despite the popular request, Sandra Oh addressed the expectations of her fans during her interview in E! News’ Daily Pop on Aug. 20. The star reiterated that “Grey’s Anatomy” is already a closed book.
“It’s really a time in my past,” she declared. “Also, [I’m] fully understanding the deep relationship that people have with Cristina, you know what I mean? I was just speaking about, during the pandemic, I think a lot of people re-watched Grey’s because it is such a friend. It’s a great privilege to have been on a show like that,” she added.
Grey’s Anatomy News – Alum Sandra Oh Stars In Netflix’s The Chair
Her avid fans will now have to move on seeing Oh in her medical scrub suit as she’s starring in Netflix’s “The Chair” as the first woman of color to become chair of a failing English department, Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim.
“What drew me to the character of Professor Kim was just the complexity of how you see the character navigate all of her relationships as a daughter, as a mother, as a boss, as a friend, as a teacher,” Oh explained.
Ahead of the premiere, Sandra Oh dropped the announcement to Instagram to show how her new role as Dr. Kim created the perfect “bookend” to her beloved character Dr. Yang on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”
The actress titled her caption “Then & Now” showing the perfect connection of her two roles with Dr. Kim’s first scene entering her office and immediately falling off her chair which is in parallel to Dr. Yang’s final Grey’s scene exiting her office in Grey Sloan becoming a director of cardiothoracic surgery in Zurich.
Both scenes showed the characters’ nameplates on the doors, which created a perfect closure for her previous role.
“These are the amazing moments you remember in your body 7 yrs later…” the caption reads.
“Wait, this feels familiar but different. Like bookends. I love Cristina. I miss Cristina. And I really love Ji Yoon. I hope you do too.”
