Law & Order SVU Mariska Hargitay Considers Her Future As Olivia Benson

Law & OrderLaw & Order: SVU spoilers tease that Mariska Hargitay, who has been the face of Olivia Benson the whole time the show has been on, has been considering whether she should continue the role on Law & Order: SVU as her ankle heals more slowly than sh e expected.

Law & Order: SVU Spoilers – Mariska Hargitay Had A Nasty Fall And Broke Her Ankle In July

Law & Order: SVU fans were worried for their favorite NYPD television cop when news of Mariska’s serious injury came out in July. Mariska is fifty-seven years old, and while her age has never been an issue before, it is a well known fact that many women around her age begin losing bone. This may be what is happening to Mariska as she broke her ankle and has been hobbling around the set on crutches.

Her friends say that this accident has made her feel her age a bit and realize that she can’t keep doing this kind of work forever. Of course, as Law & Order: SVU fans know, there would be an easy fix for more physical scenes – called a stunt double! But Mariska is concerned that even though Olivia Benson is now in more a supervisory role on the show, she often plays a hands-on role in solving crimes, and worries if a detective pushing 60 is going to be taken seriously chasing perps down!

Law & Order: SVU Spoilers – The Demands Of The Job Are Catching Up, And She Has Children Growing Up Too Fast

Friends of the Law & Order: SVU star have quoted Mariska as saying the physical demands of the role are catching up to her, and if she were to step down, she would have more time with her family. Her husband, Peter Hermann is also an actor seen occasionally on SVU but more often as Erin Reagan’s (Bridget Moynihan) ex-husband Jack Boyle over on the CBS crime procedural “Blue Bloods”. They have three children, August, 15, Amaya, 10, and Andrew, 9 and as any mother knows, children grow up way too quickly!

However, according to Mariska’s friends, she would be torn over retiring as Olivia Benson after so many years. She would only consider leaving if she could be assured that the show would continue without her. Longtime viewers of Law & Order: SVU know there have been many cast changes over the years, and many retirements of older actors but Olivia Benson has been a staple and the main draw of the long-running series. Mariska, however is signed on through the upcoming season.

Law & Order: SVU Spoilers – It Would Be Difficult To Retire Olivia Benson Entirely

Viewers of Law & Order: SVU as well as Mariska herself realize it would be difficult to retire Olivia Benson entirely, although she could possibly drop to recurring instead of starring. Her longtime friend off-screen Christopher Meloni has just returned to television as Elliot Stabler, and he recurs on SVU as well as starring in his own spinoff where Mariska recurs, Law & Order: Organized Crime. One of Mariska’s friends quotes her as saying that the role of Olivia Benson has been the role of a lifetime, and it has meant everything to her.

Besides, fans have been waiting for years for the time to be right for Stabler and Benson to have a romance; with Stabler now widowed and Olivia never married, there would definitely be room for a storyline coupling up Stabler and Benson romantically, after a proper time of mourning for Kathy Stabler (Isabel Gillies) of course, who was killed off in the pilot of Organized Crime. In fact, Meloni and Hargitay recently teased fans with a playful shot of the pair sharing a look of love! Regardless of what happens onscreen, the two will remain friends off-screen no matter what.
