Hetty has been away “on a covert mission” from the rest of her team and has only appeared via video calls and described her mission as nowhere she “wants to be” as the original cast member Linda Hunt was unable to be physically present onset due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“NCIS: Los Angeles” showrunner Scott Gemmill explained via TVLIne they are doing their best to keep everyone safe. “And Linda is a little extra special in terms of how we have to look out for her,” Scott added, noting that they filmed Hetty’s video call appearance in the driveway at her home.

NCIS: Los Angeles – Coming In With A Twist

Retired Navy Admiral Hollace Kilbride (portrayed by Gerald McRaney) suggested Hetty’s permanent departure in a recent episode that disappointed fans when he told interim Operations Manager Nell (Renée Felice Smith) with its previous episode: “She is not coming back. She has had her foot out that same door for longer than you have. And I think it’s time we accept this mission she’s on may very well be her last.”

But the top crime drama won’t allow the show to end without a blast, which confirmed Hetty’s return to HQ for the finale episode on Sunday, May 23.

NCIS: Los Angeles – Not A Drama-Free Comeback

The finale is titled “A Tale of Two Igors” which will have Hetty be caught up in numerous conflicts with Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) being kidnapped by one of Anatoli Kirkin’s associates, the team investigating the shooting of a militarized dolphin planted with a Russian microchip, and Eric offering Neil a mysterious deal.

“It was just so great having Linda back on set, especially for her scenes with Renée [Felice Smith],” Gemmill told TVLine.

The 76-year-old Academy Award winner Linda Hunt has portrayed Hetty since 2009 and has landed her at two Teen Choice Awards.

“Hetty is such an important and almost mythical character to NCIS: Los Angeles and fans are going to love seeing them together again,” Gemmill added.
