With a cast including superstars like Tim McGraw, “1883” promises to equal or even outdo the popularity of “Yellowstone.” But figuring out where and when to view this backstory of the Dutton family can be tricky. 

Even though “1883” marks the first “Yellowstone” spin-off, the prequel does not stream in the same way. But while Kevin Costner’s John Dutton famously stated, “Like to believe there’s a plan to it all, but I don’t see a plan,” the producers of “1883” actually did try to make it easy to view. The first two episodes of “1883” premiered on on Paramount+, with the Paramount Network streaming a special simulcast premiere event for the “Yellowstone” spin-off on Sunday, Dec. 19. Mark your calendar for Sunday, December 26, when episode 3 of “1883” will premiere on Paramount+.

But in contrast to “Yellowstone” airing on the Paramount Network, “1883” will not air any episodes on TV except for that first episode that debuted on December 19. Instead, the rest of the episodes will become available only on the streaming service Paramount+.

Taking place in 1883, the “Yellowstone” prequel features James and Margaret Dutton, who were the great grandparents of the “Yellowstone” generation, such as John (Kevin Costner) and children Kayce (Luke Grimes), Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley). Seeking an improvement to their financial lifestyle, Margaret and James decide to travel from Texas to Montana. But they struggle to secure a firm foundation for future generations.

Look for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, husband and wife in real life, to star for the first time together as a fictional couple in their roles as James and Margaret Dutton. Sam Elliot portrays “tough as nails” cowboy Shea Brennan, while his co-stars include Eric Nelsen, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Emma Malouff, Dawn Olivieri, Marc Rissmann, Anna Fiamora, James Landry Hébert, Alex Fine, Gratiela Brancusi, Nichole Galicia, Stephanie Nur, Amanda Jaros, Noah Le Gros, and Martin Sensmeier.

Beloved actor Tom Hanks portrays General George Meade, and his fellow guest star Billy Bob Thornton plays Marshal Jim Courtright in “1883,” reports Parade.  Hanks and Thornton made their appearances by the second episode.
