The film focuses on conflicts between shared cattle ranch borders. The nature of the film stresses more on violence and ancient masculinity and for that reason, several sources tagged the film “Anti-Woke.”

Yellowstone — Taylor Sheridan’s Thoughts On The Film Being Tagged “Anti-Woke”

The “anti-woke” tag was first given to the film by Daily Mail, followed by a Subtract article that addressed the show as “the most anti-woke show in existence.” The show is not only tagged as anti-woke it was also said to be a conservative show.

Speaking with Atlantic, Taylor Sheridan the co-creator and co-writer of Yellowstone said he always finds the “anti-woke” tag funny.

“They refer to it as ‘the conservative show’ or ‘the Republican show’ or ‘the red-state Game of Thrones.’ And I just sit back laughing,” said Taylor. “I’m like, ‘Really?’ The show’s talking about the displacement of Native Americans and the way Native American women were treated and about corporate greed and the gentrification of the West, and land-grabbing. That’s a red-state show?”

The show is also known to avoid discussing political views. At one point, Breitbart of ultra-right-leaning said the show is known for its “avoidance of woke politics and progressive moralizing.”

Yellowstone — Taylor Sheridan’s Reason For Not Discussion Politics In The Show

Taylor Sheridan didn’t only defend the show from the anti-woke label, he also gave his reasons for not wanting the show to discuss anything politics let alone “woke politics.”

Taylor explained that Yellowstone was built on “responsible storytelling” and he plans to keep it that way.

Sometime in 2016, Taylor told CNS News in an interview that as a storyteller whom his audience relies on to give some sort of entertainment and perhaps be enlightened in some way, it’ll be very rude of him to impose his political views on his audience.

“For me as a storyteller, which is a great responsibility to an audience, you know someone is going to give you their time and their money to be entertained and possibly enlightened in some way, for me to try and impart my politics on them is, I think, arrogant and patronizing,” said Taylor.

“I feel like if an audience can ever get a sense of my politics I have really failed them. I show sides of a coin. I show sides of a coin, both of them, and everyone else can make their own conclusions.”
