Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of money, so sometimes, people feel that she disrespects those who can’t live her lifestyle. In fact, last year, The View personality got a lot of flak thrown her way for claiming she can’t afford to live without her salary. This week, she’s being slammed across social media over her controversial take on life in Iran.
Controversial Comments
Forget the political background for a moment; in fact, any time that Whoopi said what she said would be seen as controversial. It came when she got into a hot exchange with Alyssa Farah Griffin.

There is a war in Israel, and Iran is sending missiles. But, behind the scenes, there are plenty of women who suffer. Married off young, not allowed to wear certain clothing, and more, they seem to be born to serve men from a very young age.
To the surprise of many viewers and Alyssa, Whoopi Goldberg claimed that it’s better to live in Iran than to be a Black person stateside. This from a woman who claims to care about human rights? On social media, it’s surprising how many Black people hated what she said. Some of them mocked her in reels. And others had something to say in the comment sections.
@nahzfontee It doesn’t get anymore delusional than this…..
Disrespecting People Who Suffer?
Look no further than Iran International for some statistics. The website claimed that in 2021, “child marriage has risen over 30 percent in Iran this year from the same period last year, with 9,750 girls aged 10-14 officially wed in a three-month period.” Notably, those children don’t include many who marry even younger in the rural areas.
It seems to be a ghastly life for a child, and their lives seem to be full of suffering. Conversely, in the USA, young Black girls do not, as a matter of routine, have to deal with that sort of suffering. No wonder people raised their eyebrows when Whoopi said:
We have been known in this country to tie gay folks to the car. Listen, I’m sorry. They used to just keep hanging black people.”
In her book, living in the USA is “the same” as living in Iran.
However, it’s uncommon to see LGBTQ+ people hanged on cranes, or thrown off buildings in the USA. So, Alyssa Farah Griffin attacked back with her arguments. Her point of view seemed to be one of shock that so many people who suffer were just blown away because Whoopi wanted to make a point.
Many More Reactions
As the comments made went viral after The View ended the show, it wasn’t hard to find reactions. Vloggers, bloggers, and anyone who has a platform seemed to have something to say. When Fox News host Greg Gutfeld and the ‘Gutfeld!’ panel discussed it, the comments teemed with irritated folks.
One of them said, “Whoopi, who has $60 million and is clearly a fake victim.”
Here are more reactions from the discussion that followed:
- I live in a Caribbean country and it’s mostly black Americans vacationing right now, and none of them looks like their (sic) under oppression, the…happiest people I’ve seen…
- In Iran, [those] throwing ‘sinners’ off of buildings aren’t prosecuted, but instead are promoted. Whoopi is the prime example of some one who lives in Bizarro World.
- Whoopi actually finally lost my respect with that stupid statement. She’s used up her…brownie points. My only question is, was she stupid enough to believe that nonsense[?]…
