The Resident original main character, Dr. Mina Okafor, bid goodbye to Chastain Park Memorial Hospital on the latest episode of the series titled “Into the Unknown.” The actress Shaunette Renée Wilson confirmed it was her final appearance.
Before the episode aired, the actress hopped on Twitter to confirm her exit from the medical drama. The caption reads: “After deeply thoughtful reflection, I approached the producers some time ago asking to leave the show and they agreed—and gave my character a wonderful sendoff.”
The storyline involved Dr. Cain (Morris Chestnut) conspiring against Mina to hide his medical malpractice under the rug. He works on getting Mina deported after learning she will testify against him. Apparently, Mina destroyed Dr. Cain’s conspiracies before he can pull off his plans by deciding to return to Nigeria due to immigration issues. This option was the lesser evil than deportation, for the former will allow her to return to the U.S. in the future.
Shaunette’s caption continues: “I am appreciative of them for allowing me to embody as beautiful of a soul as Dr. Mina Okafor. I would also like to thank the studio, network, cast, crew, and, most of all, the wonderfully dedicated fans of The Resident for their support over the last four seasons.”

The Nigerian surgical star has been on the series since its pilot in 2018. Her decision to leave the show broke hearts, including the producers. “Losing the extraordinary Shaunette is heartbreaking for us, but we are honoring her request to leave with gratitude and respect for her contribution to the show,” the executive producers said in a statement via TVLine.

Producer Andrew Chapman revealed they knew Mina wants to and is allowed to leave since the beginning of the season. He commented on Mina’s character saying she is so baked into the DNA of the show and is one of the foundational members of the cast. “That strong, truth-telling character is so important. But it is what it is, and people move on,” he added.

Fans have been asking for Mina and AJ’s love story development for so long, and they were not disappointed at the start of the season. However, it was short-lived, as Dr. AJ will now deal with the loss of a loved one coupled that with his mom being sick.
“We want the fans to know that we have lots in store for AJ as he reels from this loss, and we want Shaunette to know the door is always open,” the producers teased.
