Chicago Med faced a big challenge when the show first debuted. How could the medical drama compete among the already crowded schedule of hospital-focused prime-time TV?
But an outstanding cast coupled with clever plots managed to push Chicago Med to the top of the ratings charts.
As a result of the show’s dependence on that cast, however, fans felt shocked by the news that one of the most popular actresses, Yaya DaCosta, was leaving.
Why did Yaya exit Chicago Med, and what’s she doing now? Find out below!
Chicago Med Spoilers – Star Yaya DaCosta Wowed For Six Seasons: Why Leave?!
Yaya DaCosta seemed to have found her TV show niche with Chicago Med. As a result, fans felt baffled by her sudden departure after a successful six season run.
But the actress explained that one of those rare moments of serendipity in the competitive world of show biz occurred.
And Yaya decided to take a leap of faith by leaving the successful medical drama Chicago Med to star in the new TV show, Our Kind Of People.
The change also requires DaCosta to shift her network alliances as she goes from the NBC medical drama to the Fox show.
“My exit from Chicago Med and the arrival of this show [Our Kind Of People] happened really simultaneously,” said the actress per Deadline.
Yaya admitted that she took the opportunity at least partly because of her prior experience working with Our Kind Of People executive producer Lee Daniels.
“There was a window opening and a question mark as to whether I should stay [on Chicago Med] or go,” recalled DaCosta.
“And in that window, I fell in love with Our Kind of People and I jumped at the opportunity to work with Lee Daniels again.” Yaya had previously worked closely with Daniels on The Butler.
Chicago Med – Why Yaya DaCosta Feels So Excited About Her New Show!
As for why the actress feels so enthusiastic about her new role, DaCosta called it “a dream in so many ways.”
Yaya views her role as “saucy and so much fun! And there’s so much about my character that I felt was really important to bring to the forefront of our discussions. We’re just playing with these serious themes and we’re making them fun.”
Fox’s new show is based in part on Lawrence Otis Graham’s book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class.
In the TV version of that book, DaCosta plays a single mom named Angela Vaughn. Set in the world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, Our Kind Of People will follow Angela as she seeks to re-establish her family’s name.
