British royal family news shows that William Shatner was shot into space this week, courtesy of billionaire Jeff Bezos and his space tourism outfit. Over on the other side of the Atlantic, Prince William didn’t take too favorably to the former Captain Kirk enjoying his real life space adventure.
Shatner got wind of the prince’s comments and had a response of his own. Who said it better? Let’s unpack what each man had to say about citizens being launched into space.
Royal Family News – Prince William Has A Lot On His Mind
After 90-year old Shatner took a ride on board Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket, Wills said, “We need some of the world’s greatest brains and minds fixed on trying to repair this planet, not trying to find the next place to go and live.”
He told the BBC, “I think that ultimately is what sold it for me – that really is quite crucial to be focusing on this [planet] rather than giving up and heading out into space to try and think of solutions for the future.”

Shatner addressed Prince William’s comments in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. He said, “He’s got the wrong idea here, it’s not to go, ‘Oh look at me, I’m in space.”
“I would tell the prince – and I hope the prince gets this message – this is a baby step of getting all those polluting industries off of Earth,” he said. “You can build a base 250, 280 miles above the Earth and send that power down here.”

Prince William seemed to be saying that solutions for fixing the planet are more important than joy riding in space. Shatner agreed that there is room to, “fix some stuff down here.”
“Everybody in their lifetime needs to be reminded: You’re important, you’re beautiful do something important today,” he added. “That’s what that trip did to me – it reminded me of death facing me because of my age, but also how to protect you in the years to come.”
William was also concerned about the carbon emissions from space flights. Will he stop using private jets due to his concern? Not likely.
For the record, Bezos is joined by fellow space entrepreneurs Richard Branson and Elon Musk in sending up citizen tourists. Musk has often said that it is important to plan for “interplanetary” living if the earth becomes uninhabitable.
