On The Waltons’ Homecoming set, the former actor behind the timeless John Boy character gave some sage advice to his modern-day equivalent, Logan Shroyer.
The Pretenders once crooned, “Some things change, some stay the same” and The Waltons’ Homecoming makes it clear. With new actors heading up the same roles from the original run of the series, the classic show that Americans know and love has taken on a slightly different look.
The Waltons – Logan Shroyer And Richard Thomas Met Before
Everyone had a favorite character from The Waltons, but when asked, many will instantly recall the character of John Boy, originally portrayed by Richard Thomas. Well, now that role is being filled by Logan Shroyer and the former John Boy is now filling the role of introducing and narrating the film, so he’s been on hand and Shroyer was able to talk with his predecessor before shooting began.
Shroyer and Thomas took part in a Zoom Panel for The Waltons’ Homecoming on November 10 when they discussed their collaboration for the movie.
According to Showbiz Cheatsheet, this wasn’t the first time the two actors met. They were close family friends long before the filming of The Waltons’ Homecoming was in the making. Fans of the NBC story of love, life, and family, This is Us, that follows the lives of the Pearson family, will recall Shroyer as the teenager, Kevin Pearson.
“You know, I’ve known Logan for a few years and he’s a very good friend of my grandson Kayden,” Thomas told cameras of his relationship with Shroyer, adding, “We’ve had dinner together and we got to meet together before he went out and started shooting, what was it about a couple of weeks before, like a week.”

The Waltons – Logan Shroyer Had Richard Thomas’ Help Whenever He Needed It
According to Shroyer, Thomas offered assistance to Shroyer whenever he needed it and, since they were already familiar with one another, Shroyer said he felt comfortable taking on Thomas’ former role. In the conversation about the collaboration, Shroyer told Thomas, “I think what you said was, ‘I’m here as much or as little as you need,’ which was amazing and said, ‘Make it your own.’ it feels like we’re keeping it in the family in a way, which is just such a cool thing.”
The film aired on Sunday, November 28 but the film should be available to stream soon, on Amazon Prime, and can currently be streamed for free on The CW online.
