Emma Thompson Is Against The “Derail” Of The #MeToo Movement By Amber Heard

Emma Thompson Is Against The "Derail" Of The #MeToo Movement By Amber Heard And Johnny Depp Trial VerdictThe Cruella star Emma Thompson is strongly saying the #MeToo Movement should not be derailed following the verdict from Heard and Depp’s defamation trial in which seven jurors came together to arrive at the conclusion that both Depp and Heard are both guilty of defaming each other but sided more with Depp than Heard.

Emma Thompson — Explaining How The Movement Should Be Kept Going

Emma Thompson, while speaking on what the future holds for the #MeToo Movement (which is actually a movement created with the aim of helping victims and survivors of sexual violence and abuse share their stories and encourage other victims and survivors), told BBC’s Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4, that because the two people in the case are extremely famous, the case may be treated differently, and viewed differently than that of unpopular people.

Thompson also said she wouldn’t want the movement to be derailed at all, and explained that for the derailing to be avoided, they need to keep talking. “One of the great issues to do with that case is fame and how people who are famous are treated differently and viewed differently,” Thompson, 63, explained. “The #MeToo movement is not going to be derailed by that, but in order for it not to be derailed, we just have to keep on talking. We have to keep on talking and refuse to allow it to be derailed by a case [with] two very, very, very famous people.”

“A case where the two protagonists are that famous is not representative,” she continued. “And it’s just very important to remember that this movement—which is about human kindness and is just so simple, really, and has been made so complicated—cannot and will not be derailed by one case.”

Emma Thompson – Was Once A Victim Of Sexual Abuse

The British actress has always shown her support for the #MeToo Movement, it can be said that it’s because she too was a victim of sexual abuse. Thompson revealed in 2013 that when she was as little as 8 years old she was sexually abused by a magician whom her parents hired to perform at her birthday party.

Thompson described her abuser as an old man with grey hair and that after the encounter she blamed herself. “He was an old man with gray hair. And he took me behind a door and said, ‘Would you like a sweetie?'” Thompson told The Mirror in London. “I said, ‘Oh, yes please,’ but I had a funny feeling. He gave me the sweet and said, ‘Will you give me a kiss?’ and I said yes. So I went up to kiss him on the cheek and he planted his mouth on mine, stuck his tongue in my mouth, and wiggled it about. I thought it was my fault—children always think it’s their fault.”

Due to her experience, Thompson revealed that she had to write a handbook for her then 13-year-old daughter Gaia Wise, explaining to her about sex and emotions. “I wrote my daughter a handbook about where emotions are felt in the body, about sexual feelings and the connection between sex and emotions. And I drew pictures and said, ‘You know, you can sometimes feel things in your loins you don’t feel in your heart, and you need to look at that. If you listen to what’s going on in your emotional language, you will be able to keep the sexual activities safe.'”

Emma Thompson’s – Daughter Gaia Wise Was Also Sexually Assaulted

The Harry Potter star revealed sometime in 2021 that her daughter Gaia Wise was targeted by an attacker when she was 17, she said, “My daughter had the experience of being felt up on the Tube and felt very nervous about going out on the tube for a long time afterwards.”

She said that like many victims, her daughter, who also acts, stayed silent out of shock and shame. She added that her reaction to the assault was fairly typical of women who feel disappointed in themselves for not speaking up sooner.

Speaking to Woman’s Hour, Thompson said: “She said the thing that upset her most was not the act itself but the fact that she felt cowed enough by it not to call him out. And I think that what we suffer as women most from our shame at not being able to say ‘Why are you doing this?’

“We’re so shocked and undermined by these actions that we can’t turn around and take the action that we want and that’s the thing that sits with us and sticks with us. Which is so unjust.”
