British royal family news divulges that Kate the Princess of Wales made waves with her choice of headpiece at King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 6. The unique and unexpected crown also paid tribute to the former regent, the late Queen Elizabeth.
There was some disappointment when weeks before the coronation news spilled that Kate might not wear a tiara. But her glittery flower crown was a historic choice that also reflected the monarchy’s move to become more modern.

The gorgeous headband was a nod to the past, specifically to the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth. If you look closely you’ll see that Kate’s three-dimensional silver and crystal leaf headpiece looked similar to the ones worn by the late Queen’s six maids at her coronation 70 years ago.
On that special day, Queen Elizabeth’s maids, who helped her on arrival at Westminster Abbey, “all wore bespoke Norman Hartnell dresses for the historic day, just like the monarch.”
Royal writer Lauren Kiehna told People: “If they did take inspiration from those ornaments, it was a nice way to give Kate something that stood out visually while still reinforcing her current role as a supporter of the King and Queen.”

The outlet notes that the maids’ floral headpieces appear to be golden and white but the shape conforms to Kate’s choice.
Kate’s headpiece was a collaboration “between the milliner Jess Collett and the designer of her ivory silk crepe dress, Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen” and was the product of many, many hours which were a labor of love.

The royal embroiderer Chloe Savage told the outlet that “Everyone had a bit of a go because they needed so many flowers and leaves. You basically make the flowers and leaves on fabric with wires and then you cut them out. Then you bend and shape them accordingly.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla wanted to display a modern flare at their joint coronation and so family tiaras were out and women were told to wear “formal daywear and fascinators.” In response to Kate’s fashion change-up British jeweler Kiki McDonough said “I thought what she wore was really interesting, and it was a great compromise. It was a modern touch, but in a way, it was slightly Romanesque because they used to wear gold coronets with leaves. But in the situation she was in, it looked terribly modern.”
Kiehna added that “Kate was still able to look very much like the second lady in the land, the future queen consort, while still fitting in with the other working royal ladies who also wore floral and feather headpieces … She looked regal and important, like a queen in waiting — but not a queen quite yet.“
