Matt Damon recently shared how he helped his “Good Will Hunting” co-star Ben Affleck back when they were in high school theater. Damon’s Hard truth about life when it comes to being an actor is probably what helped shape Affleck’s acting career.
In a recent on “SmartLess: On the Road’s” podcast, the Jason Bourne actor told hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that back when he and Affleck was a freshman in high school theater, he made it his mission to issue a reality check to Affleck.
Matt Damon — Damon’s Hard Advice To Affleck
According to Damon, back then he was, “the lord of that theater department,” and he didn’t want the new guy to waltz in with the mindset that everything is easy once you have great looks.
Damon said, “When he arrived at the high school, I had to set him straight ’cause I was the lord of that theater department,” he continued, “And I went up to him, like, first day and pulled him up and was like, ‘Hey, you know it’s different here in the theater.’”
Immediately Damon said that, Jason Bateman chimed in, “You went straight douche right away,” but Damon continued his story by sharing how he told the Batman star, “‘You’re not gonna get by on your looks.'” He also added, “And we were both like, 5 foot 2.”
Damon went on to reveal that before long Affleck became famous in the theater department for starring in an after-school special, “He was like the big star of our school,” said Damon.
Damon and Affleck went on to become close pals, as they put set aside their differences and co-star in films like “School Ties” and the award-winning “Good Will Hunting” which they both wrote and it won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay.
Matt Damon — Damon And Affleck Were Once Roomies
Besides sharing the screen with each other, the friends at one time shared a bank account, and an apartment. Two months ago, in April, During an appearance on “The Late Late Show,” Affleck revealed how living with Damon was.
According to the “Daredevil” actor, he and Damon shared “one very messy apartment in Los Angeles” and he is strictly against anyone having Damon as a roommate.
Affleck said, “I would not suggest living with [Damon],” his reason is that Damon doesn’t clean up after himself. It got to the point where Affleck and his younger brother Cassey made a deal not to clean the house for two weeks just to see if Damon would take the hint and clean the house.
Affleck said they, “Came home one day, me and [Casey]. Matt’s there in his shorts and his T-shirt playing the ’92 Sega hockey game in the middle of what was the living room, just surrounded by concentric circles of garbage.”
