When it comes to her youth, Miley Cyrus is done holding back, and she’s not shying away from any topics, no matter how controversial they may seem. This week’s “Used To Be Young” TikTok video saw the singer and actress open up about her topless Vanity Fair shoot that was the hot topic of discussion back in the day.
Miley Cyrus On the Behind-The-Scenes Of Her Topless Vanity Fair Shoot
Miley Cyrus recently opened up about her infamous 2008 Vanity Fair moment that saw her at the mercy of fans and haters alike.
“We gotta go there,” she said in the 40-second video as she prepared to delve into the moment that turned out to be a noteworthy step in making a career different from the teen-pop icon of her childhood and teen years.
“Everyone knows the controversy of the photo but they don’t really know the behind-the-scenes, which is always much more meaningful,” Cyrus said. “My little sister, Noah, was sitting on Annie [Leibovitz]’s lap and actually pushing the button of the camera, taking the pictures. My family was on set.”
You might have thought that her most memorable moment would have been posing topless for the first time after being a teen pop sensation for many years, but what stood out to her was actually what she was wearing on her lips at the time.
“This was the first time I ever wore red lipstick,” she shared, adding, “Because Patti Dubroff, who did my makeup, thought that that would be another element that would divide me from Hannah Montana.”
There Was So Much Conversation Around That One Topless Shoot.
She also touched on why there was so much conversation around that one topless shoot, saying that it has a lot to do with her Disney days. “This image of me is a complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being and that’s what was so upsetting.”
You can’t say she’s not right. Disney characters have had to deal with a lot of backlash when they step away from their Disney image to come into their own. Remember Zendaya after she starred in “Malcolm & Marie” and Selena Gomez following her appearance on “Spring Breakers.”
“This image of me is a complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being and that’s what was so upsetting.”
She concluded by commending Leibovitz and Dubroff for their style choices that day.
