Princess Diana’s Ghost Was Included In ‘The Crown’ As A Publicity Stunt

The Crown is entering one of the most painful moments in recent Royal Family history: the aftermath of Princess Diana’s tragic death.

We all know the tragic tale of the dying princess being photographed by the paparazzi. The French government did the right thing and confiscated all footage from that incidence, so at least that’s one thing the public was spared.

Would “The Crown” recreate it?

Richard Fitzwilliams Says “The Crown’s” Season Six Trailer Would Be Hurtful To Both Prince William and Prince Harry

The Crown’s” season six trailer hugely divided fans due to its dramatic plotline that features a ghost. Yup, we’re in “Harry Potter” territory guys.

At the very least, people can stop taking the show as a historical documentary, instead of the fictional series loosely based on the truth that it clearly is.

Princess Diana's Ghost Was Included In 'The Crown' As A Publicity Stunt

Analyzing the trailer for GB News, expert Richard Fitzwilliams said: “Peter Morgan is an extremely skilled dramatist. He knew exactly what he was doing by the fact that they’d included Diana as the ghost. He doesn’t need a gimmick to publicise The Crown. The ghost is tacky, it is totally and obviously unnecessary and hurtful to William and Harry.”

He added that Harry seems to be “roughly comfortable” with the series, and of course, he enjoys a multi-million dollar deal with the production behind “The Crown,” so he can rarely complain.

As for the reason the ghost Diana was included in the plotline, Fitzwilliams noted that it was done to cause controversies that will in turn draw people to watch it.

“The facts are that it’s clearly something that Morgan thought he’d throw into the mix to get publicity and that’s precisely what he’s done. He wanted headlines for it, and he’s got them. It is unnecessary but it is just a risible gimmick.”

Richard Fitzwilliams Accuses The Creators Of “The Crown’s” Season Six Of Focusing On “Scandals and Invented Scenes”

For Fitzwilliams, the show could have had much more promise if only it followed through, instead of making use of unnecessary “inaccuracies.“

He complained: “It doesn’t show, for example, the attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne in 1974. What it concentrated on, as the series progressed, were the scandals and also the invented scenes.”

He also called out Imelda Staunton’s casting as Queen Elizabeth the II, saying that “she doesn’t sound like the Queen.”

However, it was the ghost thing that he felt really ruined the series, which was just entering a pivotal moment in modern British Royal Family history.

“Elizabeth Debicki is a very fine actress. She’s very good Diana. Perhaps she’ll pull it off, but the facts are that the whole idea and the concept cheapens it.”
