Warner Bros. is planning to make a big comeback by signing on Tom Cruise in a deal that will see the Hollywood superstar develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery.
The films will be a mix of original and franchise productions starring Cruise. As a result of this “strategic partnership,” Cruise and his production company will have offices on the Warner Bros. Discovery lot in Burbank.
What Does Tom Cruise’s Non-exclusive Deal With Warner Bros. Look Like
According to Variety, Tom Cruise’s contract with Warner Bros. is neither traditional nor exclusive.
The iconic actor can and will still continue to work on projects with other production companies like Universal and Paramount.
The hope is that the movies Cruise will make for the production company will generate a global blockbuster appeal and become franchises in their own right.
The move was made by Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group in 2022. Alongside David Zaslav, who hired them for the position, they have been planning to reinvigorate Warner Bros.
It might have been a decade since Cruise starred on the Warner Bros. movie “Edge of Tomorrow,” but he’s since made appearances in their other projects such as “Magnolia,” “Interview With A Vampire,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Rock of Ages” – the pursuit saw Cruise devote a year of his life for a chance to be directed by Stanley Kubrick.
While it’s normal to think the deal weird due to Tom Cruise’s advanced age – he’s 61 – the team at Warner Bros. is very enthusiastic about the partnership and what it will mean for their studios.
“We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry,” said De Luca and Abdy in a statement. “Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with [Warner Bros. Discovery chief] David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, ‘We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!’ Today, that becomes a reality and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition.”
They continued: “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tom back to Warner Bros. and look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead.”
Tom Cruise Reacts To Wonderful Warner Bros. Deal
Cruise is a busy man in Hollywood, and apart from this deal, he is still working on the 8th installment of his hit “Mission: Impossible” movie, alongside starring in a Universal action film that will see him become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station.
“I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience,” Cruise said of his Warner Bros. deal. “I look forward to making great movies together!”
