ABC Postpones Bachelor Summer Games To August 2021, Alongside 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The Bachelor Summer Games are no more. The series was supposed to air this summer alongside the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But due to increasing coronavirus concerns, both events have been postponed. The Bachelor spinoff would have featured an international cast and would have aired during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which now have been postponed to July 2021.

The Bachelor Summer Games was originally going to be the counterprogramming to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Both events are not moving forward this summer as the entertainment industry continues to halt amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to sources at The Hollywood Reporter. The summer spinoff would feature an international cast and would have aired during the Tokyo Summer Games – which has been postponed until July 2021.

Even though the Bachelor spinoff series was never officially announced, producers behind the ABC show wanted a follow-up to 2018’s Bachelor Winter Games. The series debuted as a four-episode spinoff that took place two weeks during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games. The franchise just finished filming The Bachelor and is ready to focus on The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart, which will premiere on Monday, April 13.

The Bachelorette was supposed to debut in May but has halted production amid the coronavirus pandemic. In lieu of the outbreak, Warner Bros. has either halted or shut down production on most of its television shows. The company is working on everything on a case-by-case basis. Before pausing The Bachelorette, the Clare Crawley-led season was limited to domestic travel only.

The Bachelor Summer Games would have included a global cast from other countries where the Bachelor franchise airs. The Bachelor airs in over 30 countries across the globe, with The Bachelorette airing in 13 countries. In an interview with THR about Peter Weber’s Bachelor finale, ABC reality chief Rob Mills revealed that the network is currently monitoring the situation when it comes to its summer programming, which is also expected to include Bachelor in Paradise.

That series usually films in Mexico. ABC has also begun casting for a senior citizen version of The Bachelor, which will include contestants age 65 or older.

“It’s all being talked about because you have to see how this impacts everything,” Mills said. “But it’s still too far to make decisions on anything. The summer stuff is a little farther out and in early days, really. Everyone is being vigilant. Right now, literally every hour you are getting the updates and watching and everyone will be nimble based on that.”

The COVID-19 virus, which was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, has impacted the entertainment industry around the world.
