Prince William’s Silence on Prince Harry’s UK Return Speaks Volumes

Prince William has not made a public statement about Prince Harry’s return to the UK, and that silence might be part of a bigger story. Read on to find out more.

On Saturday, the Dickie Reports and Crown Insider podcast laid it out in simple terms. They argued that what makes the story remarkable isn’t a confrontation, but “restraint under enormous pressure from a man who is one phone call away from being asked in public, on camera, whether he has forgiven his brother.”

The podcast briefly recapped the history between Prince Harry and William since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal duties in January 2020.

A Short Recap

They spent some time in Canada before later moving to Montecito, California. What followed was “six years of distance punctuated by some of the most explosive royal disclosures in modern history.”

Then came the Oprah interview in 2021, followed by the Netflix docuseries in 2022. Later, in 2023, Prince Harry released his memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry claimed that William physically attacked him at Nottingham Cottage in 2019.

After that, the brothers seemingly became strangers and, according to the podcast, they’ve been “in the same room only a handful of times” since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.

Harry Returns

Ahead of Harry’s return to the UK in late August, rumors surfaced that he and Meghan were bringing Archie and Lilibet back to Britain.

As the podcaster noted, it wasn’t just a family update. Instead, it was “a seismic shift in the geography of the royal rift.” For six years, “distance had done some of the emotional work for William.”

Harry is no longer thousands of miles away, and plenty of royal experts have wondered what might happen during family gatherings at Sandringham over Christmas, or even if the working royals could find themselves attending the same charity events as Harry.

Not Much Communication 

Rumors also suggested that Prince William was blindsided by Harry’s return, while King Charles reportedly knew in advance, although he was informed only several days before departing for Balmoral this summer.

So far, the only communication from the monarchy seems to be the letter issued on King Charles’ authority outlining the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and nothing has really changed in that regard.

Can William Speak Out?

Dickie described it as “discipline,” suggesting that if William said anything about Harry, the news tabloids would have made a lot of assumptions. Meanwhile, any sort of negative statement would possibly be seen as confirmation that there is a royal rift.

Prince William and his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, have been busy with royal engagements recently.

Soon after Prince Harry’s return, they attended the launch of a suicide prevention initiative, and since then, The Guardian reported that Prince William travelled to Norway for the state funeral of King Harald V, who died last month.

At no time during his recent public engagements has William made any statements about his brother.

Other Royal Problems 

Prince Harry is not the only problem facing the monarchy. Charles is still managing his health, while Catherine continues rebuilding her public profile following her cancer treatment. Meanwhile, the working royals are also dealing with the fallout from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s scandals.

So, it’s unlikely that the royal family would throw caution to the wind and speak openly about Prince Harry. It’s also worth remembering Queen Elizabeth’s longstanding reluctance to comment publicly on life behind the palace walls. 

Public Opinion Matters

Public opinion of the royal family matters as well. YouGov’s royal favourability tracker, cited by GB News, showed that Meghan and Prince Harry don’t rank as highly as Prince William and Catherine in public opinion. So, it could be argued that a staged reconciliation might carry some risk for William’s popularity.

Certainly, with Prince William, who is a future monarch, letting the institution of the monarchy remain quiet could speak louder than any words.

So no, William hasn’t taken any dramatic stand, and he has neither confirmed nor denied a single detail about Prince Harry’s return.

But as the podcaster noted, royal history shows that “nothing said in public really means nothing is happening behind the scenes.”
