The sudser films its episodes in advance, which is why Eileen can still be seen on screen. But the scenes have now reached a point where viewers will see Sue take some time away from Weatherfield.

Eileen had a surprising Christmas Day, as shown in the soap’s hour-long holiday special. Last year, George Shuttleworth gave her a bespoke funeral package. This year, he wants to impress her with a gift that she would love.

He decided to buy a new sofa for Eileen. However, things didn’t go according to plan because he realized earlier this week that he was scammed into purchasing a miniature sofa for a dollhouse.

Pressured to impress Eileen on Christmas Day, George pretended that he bought her an expensive sofa. After receiving her gift, Eileen was surprised to learn that her new sofa was actually a coffin covered with an old bedspread and stuffed with pillows. To make matters worse, George admitted that the coffin he used as a sofa was actually the one he purchased for her last year.

“The craftmanship is neither here nor there. How many people eat Christmas dinner out of their own coffin?” Eileen said as Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) praised the craftsmanship of the coffin.

“What have you got planned for later? Walking off Christmas dinner with a stroll through the cemetery to pick my plot?” she asked George. She also added that she has no plans of celebrating Christmas by thinking about her own mortality.

But Eileen’s day improved after receiving an e-ticket from her son, Jason (Ryan Thomas), who invited her to stay in Thailand for one month. Eileen will be leaving the cobbles on Boxing Day to join her son in Thailand. Her exit will account for Sue Cleaver’s absence from the show.
