Both Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin and armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Following on from the October 21, 2021, accidental shooting on the set of Rust, actor Alec Baldwin and the film’s head armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will face involuntary manslaughter charges. This comes after cinematographer Halnyna Hutchins was killed on the set of Rust after a prop gun Baldwin was holding discharged. Meanwhile, TMZ reports that if convicted, the charge comes with a potential five-year prison sentence.
Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin facing criminal charges
The incident happened on October 21, 2021, when a prop gun Baldwin was holding discharged on the set of Rust. This led to the death of cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins after the gun was initially not believed to be loaded with live rounds.
Meanwhile, the film’s director, Joel Souza, was non-fatally injured in the incident, for which prosecutors will not issue charges.
In an interview with ABC News host 6, 6 “didn’t pull the trigger on the gun. In fact, he stated that he had no idea why or how the prop gun fired a live round.
Meanwhile, the Hollywood actor’s claim is backed by the movie’s Assistant Director, David Halls. In fact, in a previous statement on Good Morning America, Halls’ attorney, Lisa Torraco, said:
Dave has told me since the very first day I met him that Alec did not pull that trigger. His finger was never in the trigger guard.
Previous settlement in wrongful death lawsuit
Previously, it was revealed that Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, and the producers of Rust reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit he filed. This statement would have seen the production of the movie resuming this year.
Souza said in a statement at the time:
Those of us who were lucky enough to have spent time with Halyna knew her to be exceedingly talented, kind, creative, and a source of incredible positive energy. I only wish the world had gotten to know her under different circumstances, as it surely would have through her amazing work.
Moreover, he added that, in his own attempts to heal, any decision to return to finish directing the film would only make sense for him if it was done with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family. He added:
Though certainly bittersweet, I am pleased that together, we will now complete what Halyna and I started. My every effort on this film will be devoted to honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to see this through on her behalf.
Meanwhile, production on the movie was set to resume this month. However, currently, it is unclear whether this is the case.
Moreover, at this time, no statement appears to have been issued by Baldwin on the charges. However, one year after Hutchins was killed, the actor shared an image of the cinematographer on his Instagram.
