Bethenny Frankel is convinced that Andy Cohen is not a fan of her plans to unionize reality TV amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Her decision to wade into that complicated path saw her burning bridges.
Bethenny Frankel Reveals the Challenges She Faced In Her Bid To Get Reality TV Stars To Form A Union
It hasn’t been smooth sailing for Frankel, who has seen it fit to push for the unionization of reality TV.
“I can tell you with great certainty that everyone at Bravo likely despises me, including Andy Cohen, because it’s very personal and because they have to protect the realm,” Frankel told Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview.
Even though she’s finding that the road she is walking on is a lonely one, the reality personality turned entrepreneur believes in the importance of her mission and wants to see it through, no matter what.
Frankel believes some reality TV stars are being exploited, including being made to sign “unrealistic” non-disclosure agreements.
“What we need is, we need a union – not meaning me – I’m not even doing it anymore. Meaning, that genre needs a union because those people aren’t even reading other people’s words.
They’re taking such risks by being their own voice,” Frankel explained. “And right now, during this strike, they’re going to be the ones that everybody goes to for cheap labor.”
Bethenny Frankel Says the Actors Union Wants To Help In Establishing A Union For Reality Stars
A few days after SAG-AFTRA went on strike, Frankel took to social media to question the reason reality TV isn’t unionized yet.
After that, she brought in lawyers to lay out a plan of action. However, she’s not all alone in this, as the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, reached out for support.
“While we’re talking about a union and what that would look like, they also want to know in the short term what they could do to help,” she said. “And I was saying there should be some language, some contract language that goes into these contracts that everybody in reality knows to include.”
“Like, they can’t just exploit people with these unrealistic NDAs,” she continued. “So it’s a very complicated thing I walked myself into whilst also burning bridges and seeming like I’m biting the hand that fed me, but I fed myself. There are a lot of people who didn’t get fed.”
