Diane Keaton Never Read ‘The Godfather’ Yet She Got The Cast

Trust me guys, things like this happen a lot, allow me to explain what I mean. Oftentimes we do little or no preparation at all for an examination without expecting much out of it, only for the result of the examination to show and you made it, oftentimes too, we prepare very well for an examination, the aura of confidence and success excluding from us, only for the result to come out and deflate every ounce of expectations of success that we harbored and nurtured in our hearts. That’s what I meant by things like this happen a lot.

If you experience the former a lot, feel free to liken it to having good luck, and mind you, you’re not alone in this theory because Diane Keaton is a practical example of what I just described, the difference is, while she didn’t read the book, the effort she put while auditioning for the job went a great length to get the job for her.

On Thursday, August 11, Diane who played the role of Kay Adams-Corleone, the wife of Michael Corleone in “The Godfather,” visited the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood for her Hand & Footprint Ceremony, there, she discussed some things about her acting career, the 76-year-old actress revealed that the best give she ever received from someone was being made a cast in the legendary movie “The Godfather.”

According to Diane, she was going about auditioning at every acting gig opening she heard of until she auditioned for The Godfather without having read the original book before, Diane explained that she never thought of reading the book in her life before, prior to getting the cast, she never owned the book not to talk of opening or even reading through it.

Out of excitement, she said “I think about how lucky I am. That’s what I think. And the way I think about things, like I auditioned for The Godfather, not having ever read The Godfather or caring about The Godfather or anything, because all I was doing was auditioning. I needed to get work.” The actress said that it was after getting the cast that she had to get the book and read.

Diane Keaton — Diane’s On Screen Husband Al Pacino Nearly Didn’t Get The Cast

If I were Al Pacino, every waking day of my life, I’ll thank the God of chemistry (if there’s anything like that). Diane also said that Al Pacino, 82, who played the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather would not have gotten the role in the first place because the studio never wanted him to cast but then, after watching Diane and Pacino read, they observed the chemistry between the two and without wasting time, offered Pacino the role. I call that doing what’s best for business.

Diane in her conversation wondered what it would have been like, had the studio not picked Pacino to cast as Michael Corleone. She asked “Can you imagine if [they] hadn’t cast him? So a lot of these experiences that you have come and you’re just surprised, like today, this was a surprise. This is [a] complete, utter surprise to me.”
