Everything You Need To Know About Meg Ryan’s Upcoming Rom-Com ‘What Happens Later’

In no distant time, Meg Ryan will be back on our screens with her upcoming romantic comedy movie “What Happens Next.” Meg’s return will mark her first movie since her 2015 directorial debut “Ithaca.”

“What Happens Next” was written and directed by Meg, and starring alongside Meg in the movie is David Duchovny. Meg first hinted that she was working on the rom-com in 2019 during an interview with “The New York Times Magazine.”

In May 2022, Meg made the announcement on her Instagram story with a poster for the film showing two figures dancing against a snowy backdrop. She captioned the post, “HERE WE GO!!”

Meg Ryan — Synopsis Of The Movie “What Happens Later”

The movie is based on Stephen Dietz’s play “Shooting Star,” who also co-wrote the screenplay with Meg, and playwright novelist Kirk Lynn. The movie will be produced and released by Bleeker Street.

The logline for the movie says, “What if late one snowy night you came face to face with someone from your long ago? Someone who once held your secrets, because once, long ago, that person held your heart.”

“What Happens Next” is about two ex-lovers Willa (Ryan) and Bill (Duchovny) who were reunited by fate after breaking up decades ago. They met each other after a snowstorm left them stuck at an airport and they had to spend the night there.

The movie synopsis described Meg’s character Willa to still be “the wilful, independent spirit she once was, free of any ties,” and David’s character Bill is “recently separated” and has been “reassessing his life and his relationships with his estranged wife and daughter.”

Following their unexpected reunion, Willa and Bill wished more than anything to get home but somehow, through no fault of theirs, they found “themselves at first reluctantly drawn together yet compelled to revisit their past, along with what could have been and what might well be again.”

The synopsis continued, “But when the versions of their shared history don’t quite add up, where do they go from there?”

Meg Ryan — What The Producers And Bleeker Street CEO Said About “What Happens Later”

“Variety” released a statement from the producers of the upcoming romantic comedy, as well as comments from Bleeker Street CEO.

The producers said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have the incredible teams at Bleecker Street and HanWay alongside us as we bring this special story to the screen.”

They added, “We believe it’s a look at life and love that audiences the world over will relate to and hunger for in these uncertain times when connection and reconciliation feel more important than ever.”

Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen chimed in, “To be part of this team, bringing such a popular play to the big screen is a genuine privilege. We are beyond fortunate that the project is in the hands of one of the most gifted romantic comedy actors of her generation.”

Andrew further said, “Combined with the talent of her co-stars and producers, we are honored to be on this journey and look forward to sharing the experience with audiences next year.”
