We didn’t know there’d be another “Top Gun: Maverick” for many years before this recent one, and now there’d be another “another” one?
I guess the movie still does things for its fanbase, doesn’t it?
But we’re not sure about a sequel yet, I’m only trying to manifest it.
Jay Ellis – Says He Could Be Wrong About “Top Gun: Maverick” Sequel
There’s a lot of years between 1986 and 2022, but that’s the number of years it took for the producers of the franchise to get their act together and drop another “Top Gun” movie. It was a good thing they did because it quickly became Tom Cruise‘s biggest opening weekend box office of his career.
At first, Cruise was adamant that he won’t be jumping into the world of “Top Gun” again, but hearing the movie’s pitch made him change his mind about it. But would he still be interested in coming back for one more round? Jay Ellis thinks so.
The 40-year-old actor chatted with PEOPLE at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday night about a third “Top Gun”.
Even though he played Lt. Reuben “Payback” Fitch in the highly successful movie, which dropped earlier this year, he admitted that he isn’t privy to the information regarding whether there’ll be a third installment or not.
“I haven’t heard about it, so if you know something, tell me,” Ellis told PEOPLE exclusively. “No, I don’t think there will be. What do I know? Maybe there will be. Maybe there will.”

“I mean, we would all love to work together. We’d love to do it again. We’d love to be with Tom [Cruise] again. We’d love to be in the back F18s again,” he added. “So if we’re lucky enough to do it again, I’m sure every single one of us would be there.”
Since its release on May 27, “Top Gun” has gone on to earn over $1.4 billion worldwide.
The movie’s director Joe Kosinski hasn’t dropped any hint about any ongoing discussions for another “Top Gun” sequel, but perhaps the incredible success of the latest movie will drive them to try to tap into its massive fanbase once again.
