Johnny Depp’s “Jeanne Du Barry” Opened In Cannes

“Jeanne Du Barry” will mark Depp’s first movie following his whirlwind defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard. The lawsuit, which saw Heard lose out to Depp on all three counts of his defamation case, was the talk of the internet for months before and after it took place. Moving on after the lawsuit is apparently what both parties involved in it are doing.

Heard moved out of America and will reportedly quit acting, even as “Aquaman 2” – her biggest movie till date – is set to premiere in theaters soon.

As for Depp, after facing multiple drops from high profile projects, he is finally making a comeback with a French period drama.

This will especially be a big career comeback, as the movie is set to open this year’s festival on the evening of May 16. It will be a way for the project to garner excitement before its release day.

Depp stars as King Louis XV, with Maïwenn directing as well as playing the titular character. In an attempt to market the movie to audiences other than French people, Depp will be involved in an official press conference for “Jeanne du Barry.”

It will be a way for the entertainment industry to test whether Depp is still marketable and whether he’s still got what it takes to make a comeback as one of Hollywood’s A-listers.

“I haven’t seen the movie, but it feels like it was a good way for [Depp] to get back into everything,” a veteran specialty distributor told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Jeanne du Barry” Is Timed To Release In France

While “Jeanne du Barry” is timed to release in France the same time as the Cannes premiere, it is yet to land a US distributor. But it’s typical for a French-language project.

The last time Depp was a part of the Cannes Film Festival was in 2011 for the world premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”
