“Watch Out for the Big Girls” star Lizzo gave an emotional acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards Monday night. Continue reading and we’ll fill you in on the details.
This Is For The Big Grrrls
The 34-year-old Grammy-winning vocal, and now reality TV, artist stepped out on stage Monday to accept the award for Outstanding Competition Program for her reality TV show, “Watch Out for the Big Girls.” The Amazon series chronicles the reality TV star’s search for backup singers for her 2022 world tour.
“Watch Out for the Big Girls” highlights 13 women who compete to become dancers for the “2 Be Loved” singer’s 2022 tour, per USA Today. Having premiered in March of this year, the show has become important to many young women, especially Lizzo.
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media—someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” said Lizzo as her speech began to make her well up. “If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You’re going to see that person, but b***h, it’s going to have to be you.’ This is for the Big Grrrls.”
The Emotion Is for The People
Saying ‘representation matters’ is an understatement, according to Motherly, and last night’s Emmys were no exception. Young women should be able to see themselves represented in the entertainment they consume, and we all know how underrepresented black girls as well as big girls are still, to this day, woefully underrepresented.
Lizzo thanked those women who competed in her reality TV series, holding up the Emmy statuette and declaring, “This is for the big girls!” As for Lizzo, this win means she’s edging closer to being a member of the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) club, having already won two out of the four.
“I want to say thank you to Emmys and the Emmys voters, first of all. I’m very emotional,” Lizzo described in her speech, adding “The trophy is nice, but the emotion is for the people who are on this stage with me. The stories that they shared are not that unique, they just don’t get the platform. Let’s just tell more stories.” (“Jimmy Kimmel backlash, powerful speeches, ‘Good Burger’ reunion and all …”)
Sheryle Lee Ralph Represents
The big Emmy night saw several artists celebrating representation in television, in one form or another.
Sheryle Lee Ralph of the show “Abbot Elementary,” after winning the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy, waxed emotional herself belting out a few lines from Dianne Reeves’ 1993 song “Endangered Species.” Be sure and catch the Emmys playback at the first opportunity and return here often for more spoilers, news, and updates.
