Nicole Kidman has had a long and successful reign as a Hollywood movie star, but it didn’t exactly come as a given to the “Bombshell” actress who lived in fear that movie executives would throw her to the dump at 40! Now 54, Kidman is looking back on what it took to keep her career going steady. She also shared how she defiled industry ageists to keep on making waves in the movie industry to this day.
Retired at 40? Yeah, more like going stronger at 54!
Nicole Kidman Chats About Setting Up Her Very Own Production Company In order To Make Films Women Want To Watch
Nicole Kidman recently opened up in an interview with the Mail on Sunday’s You Magazine on how she built her career past her 40’s. She further shared what motivated her to eventually set up her own production house in order to make films that will resonate with women and that she could star in.
“I was frustrated – as so many women are in different careers – at the idea of being told, ‘Well, that’s it. You’ve passed through that period where it’s all going to be fine and now you’re in your 40s we’re not interested as much in your storytelling or your ideas or in who you are as a woman or a person.’ “
Her big roles stopped coming around the time she gave birth in 2001 to daughter Sunday Rose at the age of 41. The actress said she really meditated about leaving her acting career behind and moving on to other ventures at the time.
Nicole then went on to talk about how she and husband Keith Urban were told that they only had one percent of having a child together. “Giving birth was like the end of the chapter for me. I thought, ‘Oh well, this is where I go now.’ “
She, however, did not go through with her plans to completely quit Hollywood due to the advice she got from her mother Janelle, a former nurse.
“She would say, ‘Nicole, you’re an artist and you shouldn’t just leave that behind. You should keep something back because at some point you may want to go back there again.’ “
It proved to be the right advice. In recent years, Nicole starred in “Big Little Lies”, “Bombshell” and the massive hit “The Undoing”. In the latter, she portrayed the super-rich wife of a cancer doctor (Hugh Grant) accused of murdering a woman he is having an affair with.

Kidman was also further inspired by her sister Antonia, who is three years her junior, “She had raised six kids but after the last one she said, ‘I don’t want this to be the end’, and went and got a law degree. Now her youngest is eight – and she’s practicing family law. She was looking down the barrel of fear but now I’ve seen her expand and she loves her work. I thought, ‘How many other women feel that?’ Either they’re frustrated because they want something more or they’re frustrated because there aren’t the opportunities for them in the workforce.”
“So I’m trying to change that path not only by doing it myself and showing it’s possible, but by telling women’s stories.”
Kidman will be returning to our screens in the way of Amazon Prime Drama’s “Nine Perfect Strangers”. The limited series is based on the best-selling book by Kidman’s friend Liane Moriarty. The show is about nine city-dwelling strangers who meet in a wellness center and find out that there’s more to the place than they previously expected. Kidman will be playing the strange and mesmeric wellness guru called Masha.
Apart from “Nine Perfect Strangers”, the actress is also working on an upcoming movie “Being the Ricardos”, where she plays Lucille Ball of “I Love Lucy”.
