In the 96 years that The Oscars have been running, the show has never been cancelled – even in 2021 when the entire world was locked down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the show still went on for the Oscars.

With that said, as the old saying goes, there’s a first time for everything.

With Los Angeles dealing with a wildfire crisis right now, could 2025 mark the first time the Oscars get canceled? CTS has all the information you need on this burning question.

The Situation Is Being Monitored

Currently, The Academy Award committee is looking at this situation daily to see if they will proceed with the 2025 Oscars. The concern is, considering the devastation of what’s happening in LA, that a celebration may not be appropriate.

One source notes, “The board’s main concern at this time is to not look like they are celebrating while many Los Angelenos are dealing with heartbreak and unimaginable loss.”

As of this writing, 25 deaths have been linked to the wildfires, with over 200,000 LA residents who have been evacuated and wiping out over 12,300 structures.

Is There A Backup Plan?

In the early 2000s, an idea was introduced regarding a contingency plan for the Oscars, if anything ever popped up to threaten the event.

While the ceremony is still scheduled for Monday, March 3 strategies around a backup plan are being looked into; however, no details have been released as of yet.

Regardless, the committee has decided that even if the awards ceremony continues, the famous swag bags that attendees get will be scrapped.

The goodie bags are valued at over $170,000 and many Academy Award board members feel as if handing them out would be in bad taste. In the past, items in these swag bags included jewelry, a BBQ grill (retailing at over $1,200), as well as beauty treatments. and a Swiss Alps stay.

CTS will continue to stay on top of this developing story, so stay tuned to the site for more information.
