Ty Pennington Has A Good Reason For Quitting “Trading Places”

Ty Pennington recently sat down with PEOPLE to reveal why he had to quit the show that launched his career. The carpenter and HGTV host has left his future uncertain by leaving his first television job on the hit design competition series as a builder.

He joined the show when it was still in its early stages as one of their original builders. Pennington revealed that when Since then, he’s been able to find work in other television shows.

And after spending so many years with the design competition series, he’s finally moving on because he knows his talent is worth more than he is being offered on the show.

“I had to quit that job because I knew I was worth more than I was being paid,” the “Extreme Makeover” alum said. “I took a real ballsy move, and I quit the best job I’d ever been given because I was sort of insulted.” Even though he acknowledged that it was a risky move leaving the show, he also said he believed fate was on his side.

“The thing about luck to me is sometimes something bad can happen that actually leads to something even bigger and better,” said Pennington, who recently launched his second campaign with free-to-play social casino game Caesar Slots. “You think that it’s the end of the world, but it’s actually just a whole new page that’s being turned into a chapter.”

Ty Pennington also said that his optimistic view on life was gotten after he passed through what was a very low point for him.

At the age of 27, just when his modeling career was starting to kick off, Pennington was involved in a near-fatal car accident, “My modeling career was about to take off, but all of a sudden I had stitches in my head and all kinds of stuff, and scar tissue that had to grow back,” he recalled of the traumatic experience.

With his face and body unfit for modeling for a while, and his modeling portfolio stolen afterward, he had no choice but to return to his carpentry work. Since then, he’s had a list of opportunities that has led him to the place where he is now – the host of HGTV’s hit competition series Rock the Block.

“It’s just big. There’s just so much good talent on the show,” Pennington said of the show whose fourth season premieres on March 6 on HGTV. “But I mean, let’s face it, everything is really bigger this season. Not only the location, but the houses are incredible. The views are insane. The competition is just like… I love it.” He added: “This season is so epic. It is the biggest show I’ve ever seen on HGTV.”
