Willie Nelson is yet to completely retire from the music industry even at 90. And while he can by no means boast of the numbers he so easily did during his peak years, he’s still able to draw in a crowd of 15,000 occasionally for special shows – so long as he’s got another country artist ready to team up with him.
But this week, something magical, almost miraculous, happened. “Outlaw” Willie Nelson scored a hit on two different Billboard charts.
He also earned the second biggest hit of his career… and at 90! Who said the music industry was ageist?
Why Willie Nelson’s “Beer for My Horses” Is Charting Again
Two Billboard charts published this week included Willie Nelson’s song “Beer for My Horses.” You can rarely have escaped the news of how Toby Keith’s death sent most of his years-old tunes racing up the charts with rapidity.
Well, one of those songs being reincarnated following his death included “Beer For My Horses” – his duet with Willie Nelson.
After years of absence from any chart, “Beer for My Horses” debuted at No. 18 on the Digital Song Sales chart. The weekly chart is updated with the bestselling songs of any genre within the US. This week’s tally, undoubtedly, contained a number of Keith’s songs, including this collaboration.

This means that Nelson has managed to notch the second biggest hit of his career – and at 90, it can’t come any sooner. “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” remains his biggest hit on the chart, having reached No. 12.
Throughout his long and successful career, Nelson has only managed to send three songs to the tally.
Over at Country Digital Song Sales chart, “Beer for My Horses” climbed even higher, landing at No. 7, becoming the first time it’s reached that high.
On the chart, it earned Nelson his second top ten hit ever. However, it continues to lag behind his “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” duet with Paula Nelson, which peaked at No. 3.
This week, Toby Keith marked the most successful artist on both the Digital Song Sales and Country Digital Song Sales charts.
