Dark Shadows Was On Screen Since 1966

The gothic romance, horror, and the supernatural all melded into a compelling series. It featured “ghosts, witches, demonic possession, and time travel,” Broadway World recalled. Sadly, some of the actors left the world and went off into ghostly realms. In January last year, 86-year-old John Karlen passed away. Also known for his role as Harvey Lacey on the CBS series Cagney and Lacey, he acted as Willie Looms in Dark Shadows.

Actually, Willie and Johnathon Frid (Barnabas) had a notable Dark Shadows encounter. When he came along in the show, the show received a lot of praise. John Karlen’s character Willie opened Barnabas’ coffin, expecting to find valuable jewels inside. However, his actions led to the character returning to life. Initially, Barnabas treated Willie as very much a lackey. However, over time,  he almost became the conscience of the vampire. Ending in 1971, the show probably inspired newer shows and series like Twilight, True Blood, and The Vampires Diaries.

While it also follows the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine. it’s set in more modern times, and the curse continues. No doubt the production of a new documentary, DARK SHADOWS AND BEYOND – THE JONATHAN FRID STORY, finds favor with a lot of people. The documentary was produced by Mary O’Leary, famous as an Emmy winner for General Hospital and The Young and the Restless.

Digging around into the past of the actor of Barnabas in Dark Shadows, Mary unearthed old family friends, colleagues, and others who came across him in life over the years. Jonathon Frid also toured with his own show, and some info comes from that. The story tracks the actor from his days at Yale.
