Former “Coronation Street” star Matilda Freeman has addressed her fan’s question on her sexuality during a Q&A session on Instagram. The actress has come out as bisexual for the first time.
Freeman, who portrayed the character Summer Spellman in the long-running ITV British Soap from 2017 until last year, connected with her followers on Instagram in an “Ask Me Anything” story series. A fan seized the moment to ask her about her sexuality requesting “if it’s not too personal” for her to answer.
The actress revealed she’s bisexual and wrote two heart emojis on her IG story. Shortly after, she posted thank you messages revealing that she’s received love and support since coming out on social media.
“I really wasn’t expecting it and it means the absolute world, you guys are amazing. I love you all,” the actress expressed, overwhelmed by the praises she received.
Coronation Street Spoilers – Reason For Leaving
After Freeman openly answered the most personal question, Corrie fans took the opportunity to ask her why she left the soap. Viewers last saw the soap star on-screen in August 2020 before she departed for her grandma Geraldine’s, and were shocked to see the character was recast a few months after with actress Harriet Bibby in November.
Freeman revealed leaving Corrie means opening doors to new opportunities. “When you work at Corrie you’re under a contract which means you can’t work on anything else while you’re there – so it was quite limiting,” she explained.
After leaving “Coronation Street” she starred as Lilly in “The Last Boy” and as Livia in “Lifeline.”
Corrie Spoilers – Representing The Different Spectrums of Sexuality
“Coronation Street” has featured numerous bisexual characters during its entire history with Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley) as the show’s first regular gay character, Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalg) as the first transgender character on a British soap in 1998, Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) as the soap’s first lesbian character, and more.
The show’s latest bisexual romances are the former lovers Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) and Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) and the ongoing love triangle Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley), Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), and Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) who needs to choose between the two for the soap’s first gay wedding scheduled to happen later this year.
Not only did Freeman come out this year but also co-star Kimberly Hart-Simpson who elaborated on being pansexual earlier this year after she previously claimed she was bisexual.

The Welsh actress is famously known as sex worker Nicky Wheatley and left the soap in September last year with an open-ended exit for her to return when she can.
“I have dated people who are male, female, transgender… Gender is completely irrelevant to me,” Simpson told the Mirror Online.
Hoping to see more bisexual representation in the media, Dolly-Rose Campbell has also openly spoken about being bisexual and called on soap operas to feature more bisexual characters on TV.
“If bisexuality was included more in shows that are a part of everyday’s life – similar to how Corrie did with Hayley – it would change attitudes and show that we are less ‘other’,” the actress explained.
