He kept what happened to him a secret for as long as he could, but all the memories and emotions came out in other ways. Then, the truth was finally revealed to his family.

Bernie Winter’s Guilt And Rage

Bernie felt a lot of guilt about what happened to Paul. Even though she had no idea it was going on, she couldn’t believe that she let a man like that into her children’s lives. She had no idea that Paul had suffered for so many years. Then, to have Kel move back into the area and cause Paul so much turmoil was too much.

At one point, Bernie tried to entrap him in order to get justice. She publicly exposed him as a pedophile at work. She got the community talking, who tried to punish Kel in their own way…often with disastrous results and innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. Then, Bernie planned to lure him out into the woods and kill him.

Coronation Street spoilers reveal that Paul is suspected of causing Kel’s death. He made a statement to the police about being glad the man was killed. The officer questioning him responded that nobody ever said anything about the murder. However, spoilers confirm that Paul will later be informed that Kel’s death was ruled an accident. But there are a lot of ways to make a murder look like a tragic accident.

Clues Of A Killer Secret

There are clues that Bernie is hiding a killer secret, including her being absolutely gleeful about Kel’s death. Then, she seemed quite composed after hearing the details from Paul. Perhaps a little bit too composed. When Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) asked how Kel died, Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) said they didn’t know yet. That is when Bernie dropped a hint that she might have been involved. Acting particularly shifty, she said, “Well, it could’ve been an accident… Accident or otherwise, good riddance to bad rubbish I say.”

Nobody would blame Bernie or anyone else for murdering the pedophile. Plus, she felt incredibly guilty about Paul being abused and keeping it bottled up for so long. Now, Bernie wasn’t exactly the perfect mother when her kids were younger. Perhaps getting justice for her son was a way for her to fix Paul’s torment?
