Beverly Callard, also known as Liz McDonald on “Coronation Street” revealed on Melanie Blake’s Youtube series “Girl Talk” that she was axed from the soap’s 50th anniversary storyline due to her past mental health problems.
Coronation Street Spoilers – Beverly Callard’s Clinical Depression
Callard played the role of Liz on the cobbles for 30 years, since 1989. The actress bravely opened up about battling clinical depression and how it was used to prevent her from participating in the soap’s 50th birthday storyline back in 2010.
The actress was always truthful about her mental health problems. She was even open about her admission to a psychiatric hospital back in 2009 due to a nervous breakdown.
She described depression as “the curse of the strong” and added that she “tried to hide it for so long and it ended up in a breakdown.” During that time, she was more concerned about what other people would say about her and lost all of her self-confidence.”

Coronation Street Spoilers – Beverly Callard Gets Written Off the 50th Storyline
The actress said that after she returned to work, she was busy filming scenes daily. At that time, a man came up to her and said, “You are not going to be involved in the 50th storyline of Coronation Street’s birthday, because you’ve had clinical depression you may be flaky and unreliable.” In short, Collard was written off and she did confirm that was what had happened.
She noted how men were “treated completely differently.” “A man can, if they tell someone off on set and say: “I am not accepting this, I need to do this again”, whatever, it will be fine,” she explained. She continued to say that if a woman does that, people will think that she’s a diva.
The soap’s 50th anniversary storyline back in 2010, featured the shocking deaths of Ashley Peacock (Julia Haworth) and Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) while a few others’ lives were in serious danger, including Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne). There was also a live episode that featured Peter, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), and Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine)

Coronation Street Spoilers – No Plans Of Returning
Collard left “Coronation Street” in 2019. Her character was officially out when Liz’s son Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) said her mother moved to Spain for good. Earlier this year, she confirmed that she has no plans of reprising the role on the ITV soap, saying that she’s “shut the door” “forever.”
The “Coronation Street” is yet to comment on this news.
