Christmas at Dollywood is a highly anticipated movie event that fans are looking forward to. During a recent interview, Hallmark Channel sweetheart Danica McKellar discussed how she came up with the idea, pitching it, approaching Dolly Parton and more. Keep reading to get all the exciting details on this monumental movie event!

About Christmas at Dollywood

The holiday film centers around a woman named Rachel Davis, an event planner. She comes back to her Tennessee hometown to participate in a daunting task. She must organize Dollywood’s 30th Smoky Mountain Christmas celebration.

Rachel wants to do an amazing job and since Dolly is larger than life, wants the celebration to reflect that as well. However, Rachel ends up being partnered with Luke Hakman (Niall Matter), who is described as an “unimaginative operations direction.”

She definitely has a large workload in front of her, but there’s more. Dolly herself decides to play the role of matchmaker for the holiday season.

Pitching the Movie Idea

Speaking to MediaVillage, McKeller explained how she approached Parton with the movie idea. Thankfully, she had worked with the iconic singer in the past.

“Concerning Dolly, I only ever heard yes. I know she’s busy, so it was amazing that she could give us her time. But you never know; what if her schedule had changed and she was unavailable? I held my breath for a lot of it, so to be there on set with her was so gratifying. I’m still not totally in touch with the fact that I did a movie with Dolly Parton!”

Imagination Library

Christmas at Dollywood includes the Imagination Library in the story. Danica is positive that this aspect touched Dolly’s heart. It was explained that the singer’s father never learned to read. So, making sure nobody else ever had to go through this was really important to Parton.

The library is not available in every state, such as California, so some people may not know about it or how important it is for literacy. Christmas at Dollywood will help educate people on it, though.

Christmas at Dollywood premieres on December 8 on the Hallmark Channel.
