Ryan Gosling Explains Barbie Movie Rules For Dads

The Barbie movie gave Ryan Gosling the chance to demonstrate his fabulous dance moves, singing talent, and acting skills.

But while fans cheered for Gosling’s portrayal of Ken, the actor debated a key question. And that involves his favorite role: A dad to two daughters.

Can Ryan’s youngsters handle seeing their father in all his “Kenergy” glory? “I don’t know if you should watch your father as Ken,” confessed Gosling, 43, via Us. “I don’t know what age is a good age to see your father do that.”

However, the children did watch “little parts of it,” said Gosling about the Barbie movie. “And they came to set one day when I did a big musical number.”

But Ryan also shared that his daughters adored Barbie dolls long before he became the movie version of Ken to Margot Robbie’s film portrayal of Barbie.

“I knew that they loved” Barbie dolls, he recalled. “Because they kept saying at first, ‘Hey, can we go to Target?’ And we go to Target, and then they’d slowly go by the Barbie aisle.”

But then after several visits of the girls gazing longingly at Barbie dolls, Gosling and his wife agreed. “OK, I think it’s time to let them have Barbies. And no interest in Ken, which was pretty interesting, too,” he commented.

Ryan Gosling Starred In Barbie Movie For His Daughters

And in the end, Ryan agreed to portray Ken because it seemed like “a way to sort of make something both for and with them.” However, his daughters have developed their own Barbie universe.

“My kids, their Barbies aren’t even named ‘Barbie.’ They all have their own names [and] very complicated lives, backstories, interrelationships, history — you gotta know it all,” he explained. And Gosling joked, “If you are playing with the two that are estranged now for some reason [and you did not know that], it’s like, ‘Get out of here’.”

But while the little girls prefer to play with their version of Barbie, Ryan’s wife Eva Mendes always belonged to Team Ken. And she adored his movie makeover of bleached blond hair. Eva even sported a T-shirt featuring Ryan as Ken on her Instagram. “Got that real big Kenergy. Coz girls is players too. Barbie 2023. Ryan Gosling as Ken.”
