National Treasure 3 is in the works. When the first National Treasure appeared in theaters in 2004, nobody knew that this historical adventure-mystery would become a hit franchise over the years. Some of us assumed that it would become a box office bomb.
While the film doesn’t take itself seriously and doesn’t consider itself the next Indiana Jones, it did introduce fans to Nicholas Cage’s Benjamin Gates. The combination of history lessons and action made it the ideal family-friendly movie. Even though it was lauded by the critics, the film was a box office success rather than a flop.
It earned $347 million across the globe. Three years later, National Treasure 2 arrived at theaters. It featured Gates on another harrowing adventure. Immediately after its release, there were talks of turning the films into a franchise. However, it’s been over 12 years since the last National Treasure film. What happened? Even though there were talks about a National Treasure 3, nothing came from it. According to The Cinemaholic, plans for a third film fell through. Now, it looks like fans will get to revisit Gates on another journey.
Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer announced that they’re moving ahead with the plans for a National Treasure 3 movie. The previous two films focus on Benjamin Gates, who’s a cryptologist and historian. The film also stars Diane Kruger as Dr. Abigail Chase and Justin Bartha as Riley Poole. There’s also some focus on Gates’ family, including his divorced parents. Jon Voight plays his father, Patrick Henry Gates, and Helen Mirren plays his mother, Dr. Emily Appleton-Gates. The films also give fans a look into the ancestors from his family who were a huge part of American history.

However, the casting for National Treasure 3 hasn’t been announced. Since Gates was heavily focused in the last two films, there will be a continuation of that. National Treasure 3 will probably star Cage as Gates. This would make sense since he’s a major part of the franchise. The third movie could also mark the return of Diane Kruger as Dr. Abigail Chase and Justin Bartha as Riley Poole. Since Jon Voight was in both feature films, it’s possible that we could see him reprise his role as Patrick Henry Gates as well.
While Disney has announced that they’re moving ahead with the project, there’s a long way to go until National Treasure 3 makes its debut. Chris Bremner is writing the script once again. But the film isn’t even in production. National Treasure 3 could see a release around 2022 if we’re lucky. But it hasn’t been revealed if it will be released to theaters or on Disney+. The latter could be possible since the company has been releasing a lot of new movies on the streaming service. What are your thoughts on a National Treasure 3 movie?
