“John Wick” Director Says Henry Cavill “Highlander” Won’t Rush To A Climactic Ending

There’s a million different ways the reboot of the 1986 fantasy classic, “Highlander,” could go and director Chad Stelheski is aware of that. During a recent interview, he opened up about his plans for the hit movie’s reinvention and why he won’t be rushing to replicate the movie’s awe-inspiring climax. In fact, when he’s done, you’ll be thinking that it’s a prequel for the most part.

Chad Stelheski – Says He Means To Make “Highlander” Reboot Into A Series of Films

You know how the original “Highlander” movie crammed so many exciting moments into its one hour fifty-six minutes runtime and the spinoff TV show took its time acquainting the audience to the world? Well, Stelheski wants it to be a cross between the two.

The first movie’s ending crowned immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, now set to be played by “The Witcher’s” Henry Cavill, the sole survivor of a group of dueling immortals following their climactic Gathering.

“I think we have some very good elements now,” he told the host of The Happy Sad Confused podcast. “The trick is when you have the tagline, ‘There can only be one,’ you can’t just kill everybody the first time.”

Apart from basing only on the original movie, Stelheski means to draw inspiration from the 1992 syndicated “Highlander” TV series, which ran for six seasons.

“Our story engages a lot of the same characters, but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows,” Stahelski said. “We’re trying to do a bit of a prequel — a setup to The Gathering — so we have room to grow the property.”

He also revealed that he doesn’t consider John Wick, despite all its successful multiple films and spinoffs, a franchise, but sees “Highlander” becoming one.

“We have ideas for days for the coolest characters [that could make for] an epic TV show,” he said. “I just think that’s rich mythology when you can pick any period of time, any nationality, any culture, any type of person and make them an immortal that have to duel and deal with the burden of immortality — that’s fucking cool.”
