In December 2019, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” reached $1 billion at the box office worldwide. In early 2020, the world was hit by a pandemic and box office figures for big production house movies declined.
However, in December 2021, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” hit $1 billion in box office sales worldwide, becoming not only the first movie to break box office records in over two years, but the first to do so since the coronavirus pandemic started. Cheers!
Spider-Man’s Third Installment Breaks Records And Sets Standards
According to CNN Business, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has officially become the first movie to make up to a billion dollars at the box office worldwide since the COVID-19 pandemic began. And guess what? It only took 12 days to do so. This makes it the third-fastest movie to reach the billion-dollar milestone: In 2019, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Infinity War” did so in five days and eleven days respectively.
The last film to make up to $1 billion in sales was “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”. Shortly after the film’s release, many countries entered lockdown as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The third installment in the “Spider-Man” franchise – starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Zendaya as MJ, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange – earned $253 million at the domestic box office during its first weekend, making it the most successful opening weekend for a movie released in 2021.
It also came in third overall for the highest movie opening, behind “Avengers: Endgame” ($357.1 million) and “Avengers: Infinity Wars” ($257.7 million).
Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO, acknowledged the record-breaking weekend in a statement: “This weekend’s historic Spider-Man: No Way Home results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve.”
He added: “All of us at Sony Pictures are deeply grateful to the fabulous talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that produced such a landmark film.”
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” opens with Peter Parker struggling to find a way to navigate his identity being revealed as a hateful villain. He enlists the help of Dr. Strange in his quest to change the course of history, but the two end up opening up the multiverse. This allows alternate reality villains to come after Parker, further threatening existence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
