Neighbours’ mother and daughter duo Rebekah Elmaloglou and Mavournee Hazel love their working relationship.
When it came to learning the ropes of how to get along on a popular, worldwide soap opera, Mavournee says should couldn’t have had a better mentor.
Rebekah remembers the very first time she met Mavournee during a screen test with her soon-to-be on-screen daughter. Rebekah told TV WEEK that she hadn’t felt any connection with the other possible Piper’s but was really taken with Mavournee.
“I think I was quite outspoken about Mav.” Rebekah revealed. “She walked in and it was like, ‘A star is born – and I birthed her! But seriously, the connection was there straight away.”
This connection has only grown since their time filming together, so much so that Mavournee spilled, “”She’s in my phone as ‘Mama Bek!”
Mavournee credits this connection between her and Rebekah with helping her become comfortable on set, getting to know how the soap works and how to be professional as an actress.
“I’m still learning to draw the line between work and my life, because there are lots of parallels,” Mavournee said. “For a while, it was like, ‘I don’t know where Mavournee starts and Piper ends.’ But Bek has helped me.”

Rebekah showed just how much she cares for her fellow actress by adding, “I’ve been worried about her in the past when we’ve been working on set and she’s been really emotional – especially when Travis [Burns, who played Tyler] left the show. There was one opportunity where I almost went, ‘OK, we need to cut. This is not good – this is too much.'”
The two powerful women have a similar career path, both starting in soaps while young. Rebekah, therefore, has much guidance for Mavournee, stating, “They say if you can do this sort of television, you can do absolutely everything. When you get out there and start auditioning, you’ll feel so confident. Your character has gone through so many things. You’ll be open to all of it. In saying that, I don’t want you to leave. But you need to fly someday, and I’ll try not to clip your wings to make you stay!”
There are some deep and emotional scenes coming up on Neighbours between Rebekah and Mavournee – Terese and Piper – over the next few weeks, so make sure you tune in!
