The Bachelor News Updates: LaNease Adams Opens Up About Depression After Alex Michel’s SeasonABC The Bachelor alum LaNease Adams recently opened up about her depression and the backlash she received for being the only Black contestant on Alex Michel’s season of the show. Here’s what she has to say.

The Bachelor Alum LaNease Adams Opens Up About Depression After Alex Michel’s Season

In a new essay that was written for Women’s Health, LaNease says that at first, she was very excited and hopeful about finding true love when she decided to compete on Alex Michel’s season of the hit reality dating show. However, she didn’t realize at the time that she would spiral into a deep depression after all of the racial backlash that she experienced after she left the show.

LaNease wrote, “I had already dated outside of my race a lot, so I didn’t have any reservations about dating a white guy. No one really seemed to think there was anything wrong with that here in Los Angeles, so I didn’t expect any backlash for dating someone white on a reality TV show.”

She went on to say that she was shocked by the backlash and seeing how she is from Los Angeles, she didn’t know that there was so much deeply rooted racism from people in other parts of the country. If that weren’t enough, LaNease also says that there were some people in the Black community that expressed their dismay over seeing her date a white man.

LaNease continued, “It also changes you as a person when you realize that there are some people that really hate you—and not for anything that you’ve said or done. They hate you just because of the race you were born with. I didn’t feel anger; I felt sadness.”

LaNease also says that a Bachelor producer did suggest to her that she seek help from a therapist, but she didn’t take the offer up at the time. Instead, she began to self-medicate by drinking, taking pills, and not eating. That’s when she ended up hospitalized. After her week-long stay, she began seeing a therapist, read books, and started a journal to help her make sense of all that happened after she left The Bachelor.

The reality star concluded her essay by saying, “Hopefully, it’s a lot easier for Black women and men to appear on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette now, even if they do experience some racial backlash. I hope it’s not as tough on them as it was on me.”
