During Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence Day celebrations on November 1, 2026, King Charles III and Queen Camilla got caught in a sudden downpour at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
What Went Wrong?
Queen Camilla’s hair started whipping around in a heavy, gusty wind, and she looked uncomfortable as the rain came pelting down.
Meanwhile, King Charles was also agitated and asking for an umbrella. As soon as someone gave Camilla an umbrella, she turned and walked away with an escort while Charles remained there getting soaked.
According to The Express UK, “staff members seemed to overlook that the King remained exposed to the downpour, and he continuously asked, ‘Where’s my umbrella?’ while gesturing with his arms.”
Fortunately, his equerry, Major Ben Rigby, stepped in shortly after to hand him a black umbrella.
The Delay
UK Head Topics also wrote about the Monarch standing in the rain. Quoting Charles, the outlet said that he joked about how he was “growing watercress on my trousers.”
Apparently, the reason for the umbrella mix-up wasn’t all about inefficiency, as it is customary in Antigua to remain motionless and quiet while the national anthem plays. That explains why aides were slow to provide the umbrella.

Fortunately, it wasn’t a thunderstorm, so King Charles and Queen Camilla were not in a terrifying situation. But some people felt concerned about his health.
Royal Family Fans React
When Hello! shared the story on Instagram, lots of people weighed in. While some folks dismissed the whole thing, others talked about Charles, his age, and his cancer.
One person wrote:
As sick as he has been to then go through that rain. I hope he doesn’t fall ill again. He did his duty and returned to the podium until someone officially escorted him off.
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- “The organization and preparation by the Antigua government were terrible. The Queen obviously had to leave, but she should have left via the carpet, not the grass. How could they not have the King’s umbrella ready?! Good heavens!”
- “Good heavens! If they know about tropical climates, how can they not be prepared?! They’re exposing a 77 year old man undergoing cancer treatment to those conditions; it’s more admirable how the King remains stoic in the face of this.”
- “Where was his umbrella? Shouldn’t they be more quick given his health is of concern.”
- “You know William would just stand there and get rained on.”
Your Thoughts
What are your thoughts? Do you think it was rather bad that the umbrellas were not available straight away? Are you shocked that Camilla took her umbrella and left King Charles to stand in the rain?
