Royal Family News: Princesses Beatrice & Eugenie Sometimes Rank Higher Than Kate Middleton

Beatrice And EugenieBritish royal family news divulges that centuries of ruling the UK has allowed the monarchy to dream up and implement untold arcane protocols, rules and rituals. Today some of the traditions forged by Queen Elizabeth I in 1595 are many of the most exacting rules for the British royals.

Royal Family News – The Monarchy Must Follow Protocol

Curtseying and bowing is one of the traditions that baffles commoners. For instance, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are required to curtsy to the Queen, but also to others in the clan.

This includes royal princesses from birth. Today these princesses include Princess Anne, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie. It is an old rule of precedence that Queen Elizabeth I set in motion and it effectually, “ranks blood relatives of the monarch above almost anyone else in the family,” according to People magazine.

Royal Family News – Who Bows To The Queen?

Wendy Bosberry-Scott, Peerage & Baronetage editor at Debrett’s Women is one of the select people who actually understand the complex hierarchical rules that the royals live by. For instance, women like Kate and Meghan who marry into the royal family gain their titles via their husbands and are, “of a lower rank than those born into their titles.”

“Essentially, the hierarchy exists to ensure that the princesses who are born with royal blood, like Eugenie and Beatrice, aren’t kind of pushed to one side.” Is this a case of blood being thicker than water?

Royal Family News – Meghan And Kate Were Commoners

“As far as the public is concerned, the most visible representation of this tends to be the order in which they might stand at a public event, or the order in which they might enter or leave a room, or who curtsies to whom,” the spokesperson continues.

Being women, Kate and Meghan have another status rule which applies to them. According to Elizabeth I’s rules men are almost always given precedence over women, the Queen being an exception. So, not only are Kate and Meghan on a lesser plane than royals by blood, they are also on a different level than the males.

For every rule there is an exception, stay with us while we try to explain this next royal oddity. “When the wives are with their husbands, their status is elevated to reflect the fact that the men are present,” says Bosberry-Scott. “As the men have a higher rank than the princesses (Anne, Eugenie, and Beatrice) they have precedence, and this higher rank is reflected on their wives, so they are then moved ahead.” I like to think of it as guilt by association.
