British royal family news shows that May 6, 2023 will go down in history as the day King Charles and Queen Camilla were crowned in Westminster Abbey.
The world delighted in the pageantry and tradition, despite a few naysayers including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as well as some royalists with signs reading, “Not My King.”
But the entire shebang reportedly cost around $125 million which has given rise to debate about how much money the royal family brings in in terms of tourism dollars. The answer may surprise you.
Royal Family News: Prince William Next In Line
According to CNN “The economic consultancy Centre for Economics and Business Research estimated that the coronation weekend would lead to a $422 million boost from tourism and public spending” which is a nice return on investment.
Additionally, 2011 research shows that the majority of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, with their history the biggest attraction to tourists.
Royal Family News: King Charles is King
Furthermore, Americans constitute the largest segment of the UK’s tourist industry. There is a caveat to that however, as a 2021 poll showed that 68% of Americans viewed the late Queen Elizabeth favorably, while only 34% had the same opinion of Charles. In other words, tourism could take a hit with controversial Charles in charge.
Royal Family News: UK History Attractive
Interestingly enough other tourist groups have significantly less interest in the royal family. For example a 2016 poll revealed that 19% of German, 15% of French and 10% of Spanish travelers come to the UK because of the pull of the British monarchy.
The topic is not insignificant, as there are plenty of forces who would love to see the monarchy abolished, republicans for one. In fact, the anti-monarchy group Republic has called into question the claim that the monarchy “generates £500 million in tourism income for the UK annually – which itself would be only a small fraction of Britain’s £127 billion tourism economy.”
But it would be folly to suggest that centuries of royal tradition do not appeal to the average citizen. Charles’ recent coronation proved that. And closer to home, Charles and the rest of the family proved to the traitorous royal runaways, Harry and Meghan, that all their efforts to demolish the monarchy have come to nothing, zero zed. Take that for data.
