I think you're right. The Royals constantly live with difficulty trusting people because of who they are and the obvious advantages someone could use by getting close. For them to have a member of their own family use them in such a way must be very difficult for them indeed. I think the Royals will want to mend bridges because they are family but mending bridges is a little easier than regaining trust. After a family situations you can ask someone to tea and give them a hug but that doesn't mean you trust them with your pension.
