British Royal family news reveals Sarah Ferguson is embracing “Sarah”, “good old Fergie” and being a Duchess as she continues to explore new facets of herself and her life at 61. But one thing that she knows is that Princess Diana, who died at the age of 36 following a tragic car accident, would have been proud of her boys and the choices they have made in securing marital happiness.
Duchess Of York Speaks Out About Prince William And Harry’s Spouse Choices
Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, mother to Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice and ex-wife to Prince Andrew, appeared on PEOPLE to promote her upcoming book, but she could hardly stay away from the topic that’s been circulating in recent times: Harry and Meghan Markle’s showdown with the royal family, and of course Harry and his brother Prince William’s strained relationship.
While most royal watchers rushed to take sides with one brother or the other, Auntie Sarah believes Prince William and Harry both have equal chances of happiness with their spouses, and she also believes that childhood friend, Princess Diana, would feel the same.
“She would be very proud of her sons and their wives,” the Duchess of York opened up exclusively to PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “And she would be just like me, obsessed with her grandchildren. Because that’s what she loved.”
Speaking about her daughters, Princess Beatrice, 32, and Princess Eugenie, 31, she said that Diana “adored my girls. She adored the boys. This would be her haven. Her heaven.”
“If she were sitting with me right now, I know she would say, ‘I am so proud of both of my boys and the wonderful wives they have chosen,'” she said of Diana’s sons: Prince William, 39, and Prince Harry, 36, and their spouses: Catherine Middleton, 39, and Meghan Markle, 39. “Because each has got her own voice.”

“We were best friends from when she was 14 and I was 15,” added Sarah, who affectionately called Diana “Duch.”
“She taught me so much of public life,” continued the Duchess. “She was so brave. We used to have the most incredible time together.”
She also addressed past reports that she and Diana were not on good terms before Diana’s death in 1997, “We promised each other we would always be together — there was never any daylight between us. But everybody wanted that, because we were so strong together. People want to break something so strong.”
